About LEGO365

Hi.
I’m Dan. I love LEGO, and I love photography – so it only seemed natural to mix them.

From June 1, 2008 – May 31, 2009, I took a photo with a LEGO mini-figure every day. An entire year. This blog chronicled that project .

Then LEGO started releasing the collectible series of minifigures, supplying me with a seemingly unending array of different characters to create fun with. So, I decided to do it again. Year two ran August 1, 2010 – July 31, 2011. All those photos are here as well. All told, there are well over 730 photos here, mixed in with some contests, LEGO book reviews, and some random cool stuff I wanted to share.

For my other photography, please check out my Flickr page, here.

To contact me, email me at: dphelpsphoto[at]gmail[dot]com

Follow me on Twitter & Instagram: @theSurlyBiker

To buy copies of my photos, photobooks, calendars, and more go here.

If you re a publisher that would like to help me get my photobooks published for real so I can offer them at a much cheaper price than Blurb lets me, please contact me. Same thing for the calendars. You know you want to.

Why, oh why, wasn´t this my idea? So cool-funny.

I saw “A space odyssey” just a few nights ago so I
could appreciate the Monolith. But my kids, they just… What?!!

Just stumbled upon your page and had to call my 6yo son in. He loves Legos and I think his little brain is working now, thinking about all the crazy things he could do with his legos. We’ll be checking back to see the rest of the pics.

He was sad to see that several of the pics weren’t working (they come up blank) like today’s picture. He wants to look at them again.

I’m back. My 6yo son just came in and begged to see today’s picture. I realized after the last message that it was a server problem with the pictures…all of mine were gone as well. I also discovered your Flickr account just after posting that so we got to look at all the pictures there. Kudos for the great idea. You inspired my children.

After they saw your blog they took their Legos, dinosaurs and camera out to the back yard and were having an adventure and snapping pictures of all the action.

Always enjoy your Lego guys!!! My personal favorite (so far) is the Burger King “prop” So clever, so funny. If you had a calendar we would buy it. Seems like a lot of legal mumbo junmbo. I hope you never tire of taking the photos, or the Lego figures rebel against you. LOL, We tell many people about you and have even marked you as a favorite on our local Apple store’s computers, iphones and ipod touches!!!! You are famous.

    September 16, 2008 at 7:07 pm

  29. I also love Lego and just bought this hoodie from headhoods.com. I love it!

Are you willing to sell some of these images? For private use. My son is crazy about the “gonna need a bigger boat” pic and I would love to frame it for his room. Thx, the whole family loves this site.

    September 29, 2008 at 4:12 pm

  31. When I have completed the 365, I will be making a photobook containing all of the photos, as well as hopefully sell each print individually – the good ones anyway – or any by specific request. I need to work out legal issues with LEGO before I sell anything. I know it’s a long time to wait, but please understand! Thank you! and Thanks for checking!

First let me say this blog is awesome! I love your creativity, both photographic and with the Lego scenes. If I may be so bold, here’s an idea for a future picture: Have you thought of combining the “little” Lego with some of the “Big” Lego designed for toddlers? My daughter turned 1 last month and I just “had” to get her her first set of Lego. It got me to thinking, those little Lego guys on your blog would really have some fun with a “larger than life” sized block! Hopefully you have a friend with kids who could loan you some BIG Lego blocks.

In a little over an hour I’ll be picking up my 9 year old from school. I guarantee he’ll spend an insane amount of time at your blog and then he’ll try to mimic with his own legos. Guess I’ll have to hand over my old point and shoot… And if he doesn’t (which I doubt) I may have to myself. I buy my boys legos because I am the one who loves them… thankfully they have their mothers dork qualities that make us all so endearing

It is traditional amongst the AFOL community to show appreciation for a LEGO blog or webcomic by sending a gift of LEGO to the artist. You don’t seem to have covered this option in your blog anywhere. Perhaps you could add it to you FAQ?

    • do a search on flickr and you’ll find oodles and oodles. the majority of them will be self-portrait 365s. these are usually full of overly photoshopped photos. personally, I find them boring.
if i’m following or doing a 365, i’d want to see something different every day.

    Hi
I have a 4 year old son and a box of Lego since he was 2 but he rarely plays with it. I have never had any Lego as a child and I am not very creative with it. How to encourage him? I think playing with Lego is a fantastic thing!

  106. Just found your blog, and you have outdone yourself!! We are enjoying every single one!! Thank you. #353 is too much – just the thought of those 2 faces!

    Hi

You are a very fine Lego artist, and I want to be as good as you. Can you please do another year? I think your Lego pictures are very fine, and I get new ideas all the time. E.g I have been inspired by the storm-troopers wardrobe and the weight-lifters.

    Greetings from Norway, Elias (9)

    October 9, 2009 at 1:20 pm

  111. Elias, thanks for stopping by and I’m glad you’re inspired! I don’t have the ability to do another year right now – just don’t have the time!
Maybe soon I will do another project.
    Stay warm!

I stumbled upon this site tonight and I’m thrilled! My whole family loves Legos! We use Legos to do things as a family – whether playing Lego Star Wars on the Wii, celebrating the holiday with our Lego Advent Calendar, or just building!

My son & husband made a stop-action Lego movie last year for our son’s elementary school’s film festival. It’s great to see an educator with so much creativity!! Thanks for sharing with the world – we’ll be watching your creations!

    December 17, 2010 at 8:23 pm

  125. This is such a great collaboration of two things you are passionate about.

Interesting that I stumbled upon this, we are residents of TN and we have a 5th Grade student. Coincidence . . . . From the amount of snow in your recent posts you must be in East TN while we are in Middle TN though.

Just a few days ago I heard about a Dad her photographed his daughter everyday for 10 years and then put a time lapse video of the photographs together and it was awesome. That might be a cool way to view your photos together in one place.

  131. First off I think it’s awesome, I laughed so hard at day 94, I damn near fell off my chair. My only suggestion is to work on the captions, the photography is good, and I like the abstract visuals that you use some of the shots.
I think the best idea would be to post the picture, and then ask for comments on what the caption should be.

    Just my two cents though

    December 19, 2010 at 2:29 am

I do a similar sort of thing on my blog, http://apictureeachday.wordpress.com, where I take a picture each day of my first year at university to give people an idea of what student life is like these days, if maybe they haven’t been yet or are just interested.
Take a look and if you’ve got any feedback, feel free to say!

  141. Do you have an archives? I want to explore your previous posts without having to scroll through pages and pages. Thanks, and Happy New Year!

    January 1, 2011 at 12:34 pm

    • If you don’t want to scroll through the pages, you can view the entire first 365 project on my Flickr page here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rattleandhum/sets/72157605378152096/

The first few weeks are a little rough – some not so good photos – but once I found my footing both in the ideas and the photographic part of it, the pictures really improved. There’s a lot of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken in the first year. Please enjoy.

Also, let me know which ones anyone would be interested in buying prints of so I know what to offer up for the next round!

      January 1, 2011 at 1:39 pm

  142. Thanks for the link! 🙂 And print-wise…the ‘investigator’ series is my favorite.

    January 2, 2011 at 6:28 pm

Good luck with the rest of the project.

  144. Hi Dan,
Stumbled on your site through google alerts. I’d like to see your lego art each day & was wondering how to sign up for that. Are you on facebook?
There will be a lego robotics art talk at a local gallery where I am volunteering & I think the others would love to see your work.
You have a delightful sense of humor!
    Christine

    January 29, 2011 at 8:03 am

    • Hi Christine,
The best thing to do is just bookmark this blog! You can also click the RSS button to add it to your RSS feed – this is assuming you use an RSS reader to compile posts and news in one spot.

I also post the photos – and all the rest of my regular photos, on my Flickr page – which can be found in the Links list at the bottom of every page.

I am on Facebook – but it’s just my personal account. I have not created a page for my photography. I’m not a pro-photog business, so I wasn’t sure if it was appropriate.

I’d love to have exposure in a gallery! Please feel free to share any of my websites with them. My contact info is on the “About” page here.

And if they are interesting in having prints or calendars of any of the photos, they may get those buy clicking on the “Buy” page on this site.

      Thanks so much!
      ~Dan

  189. Dan – I once suggested you have a facebook like button and then lo and behold a facebook like button appeared. Now I have another suggestion. You should add a ‘from the beginning button’. Then someone could click the button and start watching your photo blog posts from day one. Some us caught you from midway of your project. Some were with you from the beginning. But you have new followers now. Maybe you have this ‘retro’ click already but just curious where it is.
