Day 317

NOTE: Ok, so, about 5 minutes ago, my friend just informed me that today’s caption can be construed as a racist and derogatory remark. I want to assure you this was absolutely not my intent, and apologize to anyone who may have been offended by it. Please understand the picture and caption should be taken in a very literal, and not symbolic sense. Thank you.

Officer Pete hit the throttle hard. He wasn’t going to let this monkey get away.

Hey, great and funny pic. I have enjoyed following your blog from almost the beginning. I think I started on about day 18 or so.

I have never seen anything to infer any racism of bigotry in any of your posts. I’m afraid I don’t see it in this one either. Not that I want to now – but I’m worried that I might accidentally offend someone.

I often refer to my sons as little monkeys and have before said that I have a houseful of monkeys when my sons have friends to visit. Could someone (perhaps discretely) let me know in what context monkey is NOT to be used.

Great picture. Seeing all these Lego setups really brings back my younger years.

I didn’t for a moment consider the possibly racist interpretation of this, taking it completely literally, as intended. Nonetheless, it’s thoughtful and prudent of you to have added the note.

  6. Me too, I just thought it was a Monkey on a bike!
    I really love this blog!

  7. I interpreted in the literal sense too.

I’m quite amazed how often you hit the jack-pot with your images and texts. This blog is definitely a huge favorite of mine!

Racism? What the heck??? There is a LEGO monkey on a bike, and a LEGO cop doesn’t want it to get away… I fail to see anything even remotely racist here.

Some people are overly sensitive here… 😦

  9. I’m not smart enough to think things like that. 😉 I just thought it was cute, as usual.

Sad that we need to put a disclaimer on a Lego picture just in case someone gets offended. Keep up the good work…almost there!

  11. Love your blog. I have never seen anything offensive here.

I thought it was funny to. It is a monkey on a bike…a literal take on a common saying. Monkeys are cheeky naughty etc.. No problems here.

Anyone who has a problem with that has a real problem.
I love what you do and check everyday and you entertain me!!!

  14. thanks for the comments/support everyone.
i just figured since someone knew it was a discriminating slang to some, it would be prudent to put up a disclaimer just to make sure my intentions were known.

  15. Did a LEGO monkey write in complaining that you were painting them in a bad light?

    April 14, 2009 at 7:36 pm

  16. All I saw was another fantastic and entertaining photo! Please keep them coming, and go longer than one year, please!

    April 14, 2009 at 8:52 pm

  17. these are just awesome… and i mean come on, its just a monkey on a motorcycle.

I have been following for a little while now… thanks for the daily entertainment and endless jealously (since I am guessing LEGOs are not in short supply at your place).

OK, so now LEGO monkeys symbolize something else?! As if!! Is this person suggesting that LEGO stop producing monkeys?
I love the caption just as it is!

This has to be the most comments I have seen on any of your daily posting. No offense against your friend, but I think he is the only one who saw anything racist about this posting. Love what you do, keep it up!

always fun to check your blog with my kids. no racist vibes detected here, either.

  21. Maybe your friend is racist for even thinking that…lol I love your blog and have never seen anything at all offensive.

I didn’t think of it as offensive. The movie Jumanji came to mind as I looked at the picture. Remember all the bad monkeys in the movie?

Thanks for the photos and keep up the great work!!

I see how it can be interpreted as racist and I’m amazed at how no one else does. Now I wonder what that means about our society? But great blog! Those crazy LEGOS!

We just found your blog accidentally, looking for Lego coloring pictures, and my sons (4 and 7) and I love it! I just wanted to add that in addition to the great humor, this picture and its disclaimer led to a great discussion between the three of us about racism and racist language. We of course knew that this was just a picture of a monkey on a motorcycle, and what’s not funny about that? But it also gave us a chance to talk about some important things. We’re about 100 pictures through (starting at the end) and having a marvelous time! Can’t wait to watch you do it again!
