FAQ (Updated 02/12/11)
Q: Where did you get this idea from?
A: A lot of people on Flickr do 365 projects. A majority of them do self-portraits the whole time – and I find that incredibly lame, and boring. Clearly, LEGO is way better. There are a lot of other people out there who take LEGO photos as well, I’m just another one of them.
Q: Why don’t you update every day?
A: Well, this time around, life is little more complicated than my first 365. Wife, pets, job, general malaise – all get in the way! But rest assured, I’ll update as soon as I can.
Q: Where do you get your ideas?
A: Most I think up on my own. Some I get from my wife and friends. Others are submitted via the Formspring page.
Q: What kinds of LEGO do you have?
A: Over the past few years as a result of doing this project (now twice), I’ve acquired quite a few new sets (mostly small), and a ton of minifigures. I’m always on the lookout for new minifigs and small sets/setups I can use in the photos. I’ve even had some really awesome folks mail me minifigs!
Q: Where can I see other photography by you?
A: On my Flickr page.
Q: Can I buy copies of the photos here – or ones on your Flickr site?
A: Yes! Photos can be purchased at SmugMug, and 2011 calendars can be found at RedBubble. Please also see the “Buy” tab at the top right of the page.
Q: What kind of equipment do you use?
A: My camera is a Pentax K100D Super. My lenses include a Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8, and a Quantaray 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Macro. I shoot the majority with those two. To see everything, check out the “Equipment” page tab at the top of the site.
Q: What is your name/handle when you post responses to someone in the comments section?
A: mrphelps
Q: Do you have Twitter?
A: No, but I’m considering it.
Q: Do you have a Facebook page?
A: Yes, a personal one. I have not created one for my photography – I’ve considered it, but wasn’t sure about it since I’m not a business. Should I?
Q: Can I leave comments / suggestions / feedback?
A: Absolutely.
Q: What do you do in real life?
A: I’m a 5th grade teacher. My favorite thing to teach is Science.
Q: How long have you been into photography?
A: I’ve always loved taking photos, but I’ve been into it seriously for about 5 or 6 years.
Q: I’m new to photography, what kind of camera can you recommend?
A: This is a tough question that can go many different ways. Most people think that Nikon & Canon are the only cameras out there because it’s all the see at places like Best Buy. The sad thing is those people are missing out on some fantastic other options. Of course, it all comes down to taste and a matter of preference. I love shooting with Pentax. My 4 year old camera still out-performs a number of current cameras. Pentax has the best, hands down, entry level dSLRs on the market today with the K-x. If you’re looking for a mid-level camera, check out the K-r, and for a high end camera, take a look at the completely weather-sealed K-5. It’s worthy of note the K-5′s image sensor out performs all current Canon cameras, and is only beaten by the super-pro-level Nikon D3s and D3x with costs of $5000 & $7500.

What a wonderful idea…I’m still love my legos at 50. The pictures put a smile on my face! I’m looking forward to seeing the new one every day.

I found this site linked from the WordPress site. A brilliant idea – it has launched a few ideas for how to explain certain key skills (finding north using a watch) and using Lego. Thanks!

I am a huge fan of Lego, but haven’t seen a lot of the minifig faces you use. Are they all standard, or have you modified any of the Lego used?
January 11, 2011 at 3:12 pm
Amazing work, btw. Forgot to add that!
January 11, 2011 at 3:13 pm
No mods. They are all faces and minifigs direct stock from LEGO! Some are the special editions or the limited edition series.

What a cool blog. My 10 yr old is a huge lego and (starwars) fan. I’m going to have to show him this!

Hi Mr. Phelps! Just discovered your blog and your photography! Very cool! I wanted to suggest that you check out Photo Doctor group on Facebook – great place to post your photos, get feedback – good and bad – but a great place to see all kinds of photography!
Thanks for the laughs on a Saturday night!

Found your page looking for an International Lego Day. (Well, there should be one…) Wonderful! Right up my alley. My husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary at Legoland. How do you decide which photos to offer for sale? I would love to buy day 305. Thanks for all the laugh out loud images.

mr. phelps,
you should be proud, your LEGO photos have inspired me to do a lego series of my own!
it stars my signature minifig, as well as a few of my friends in LEGO form.
i haven’t created a website yet, but if i do, you’ll be one of the first people to know about it!

Hey Mr. Phelps: Just wanted to let you know I’m nominating you for a Versatile Blogger Award. Not really an award, per se, but it is a nice way of saying how much I love your work. If you want to participate, I explain a bit of what’s going on in the blog post where I nominated you: http://snoekbrown.com/2012/02/02/im-not-very-bendy-but-apparently-im-versatile/
All the best!
Sam
